Review + Giveaway: Tempest (Tempest 1) by Julie Cross

Synopsis:

The year is 2009.  Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler.  Recruit… or kill him.

Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

The Elliott Review:

This book has had so much good press so far and achieved so much success, and when I finally got to sink my reading teeth into it, I was ecstatic to find out why! First of all, I love it that it starts off with Jackson and Holly being together in college. That's something you don't see a lot in YA, so it was different and interesting. Jackson and his nerdish friend Adam experiment with Jackson's abilities while Jackson leaves Holly basically in the dark about what he can do.

When Holly is murdered in front of him, Jackson goes back two years in time and gets stuck. He finds out that his father has not been up front with him about his own birth and background, so in addition to getting to know the Holly of that time period, Jackson also seeks to find out the truth about himself. I loved that the entire book is from his perspective. He is a typical boy that tries to deal with his deeper feelings in typical boy fashion.

The pacing of the novel kept me breathless and guessing and reading as fast as I possibly could. I can definitely see why this book has already been optioned by Summit Entertainment. The fast-paced action mixed with the romance and feelings and interesting take on time travel all combine to be amazing in book form, and I believe some of the book's cinematic qualities would translate very easily into a movie.

I'm already dying for the next book in the series to come out!!!!

Young Adult Notes:

Some strong language, a few risque sensual scenes, violence.

  2. Ohh I cannot wait for this one. I loved the concept of the later start in the YA life and then going back through a progression in time to change the events of the past. Yes. Thank you!

  7. Starting off in college? You're right. That doesn't tend to happen a whole lot in YA. Usually they focus on high school if they're going to bring in school at all.

    Thanks for the giveaway!
