Review: Someone Else's Life by Katie Dale

Synopsis:

When 17-year-old Rosie's mother, Trudie, dies from Huntington's Disease, her pain is intensified by the knowledge that she has a fifty percent chance of inheriting the crippling disease herself. Only when Rosie tells her mother's best friend, "Aunt Sarah," that she is going to test for the disease does Sarah, a midwife, reveal that Trudie wasn't her real mother after all. Rosie was swapped at birth with a sickly baby who was destined to die.

Devastated, Rosie decides to trace her real mother, joining her ex-boyfriend on his gap year travels, to find her birth mother in California. But all does not go as planned. As Rosie discovers yet more of her family's deeply buried secrets and lies, she is left with an agonizing decision of her own, one which will be the most heart breaking and far-reaching of all.

The Elliott Review:

This book is a moving story that follows Rosie's emotions and ordeals as she learns that she was switched at birth and attempts to find and reunite with her birth mother after the mother who raised her dies of Huntington's disease. She travels with her ex boyfriend, hoping that their can possibly be more between them.

Instead of finding the instant acceptance that she had always wanted, Rosie finds that the news she brings across the Atlantic starts to tear a home apart. The other switched baby, the now engaged and pregnant Holly Woods, has some issues to work through upon finding out that she may have inherited her birth mother's condition. Everything begins to break apart even more as the girls learn the truth of their situation.

I really enjoyed the alternating perspectives of Rosie and Holly as they each cope in their own way. They struggle with issues of identity and family and of personal choice. This is definitely a story that will grip old and young readers alike.

Young Adult Notes:

Mild language, sensitive themes - abortion, self-harm, etc.

Past Contest Winners (the late edition)

I've been so late in announcing some winners to past contests. Most of these individuals have already been informed of their win, a few have just been notified, and most of them will be mailed soon... Sorry for the delay/disorganization. My blog has taken a back seat to a lot of things going on right now, and I can't say that I'm really sorry that's happened because they're good things. But still I regret any inconvenience!!!

Waiting on Wednesday: Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill

It's one thing to fall head over heels into a puddle of hazelnut coffee, and quite another to fall for - gasp - the wrong guy. Straight-A junior Julia may be accident prone, but she's the queen of following rules and being prepared. That's why she keeps a pencil sharpener in her purse and a pocket Shakespeare in her ... well, pocket. Julia also believes in fate, and that Mark, her childhood crush, is her MTB - her meant-to-be.

But this spring break, Julia's rules are about to get defenestrated (SAT word: thrown from a window) when she's partnered with her personal nemesis, class clown Jason, on a school trip to London. After one wild party, Julia starts receiving romantic texts ... from an unknown number! Jason promises to help discover the identity of her mysterious new suitor if she agrees to live a little along the way. And thus begins a wild-good chase through London, leading Julia closer and closer to the biggest surprise of all: true love.

Because sometimes the things you least expect are the most meant to be.

Look at this gorgeous, recently released cover! I can't wait to read this one! The thing that excites me most is that it is set in London ... you can see Big Ben in the background of the cover and everything. I also love that the character sounds kind of nerdy and quirky. A girl I can definitely relate to.

What are you waiting on this week??
